A Kossthok címere
Kossuth Lajos személyisége köré számos romantikus vonást szőtt a kortársi képzelet: egyáltalán nem tartották véletlennek, hogy éppen a legnépszerűbb magyar király, Corvin Mátyás adományozott a Kossuth-családnak címereslevelet. A „kutyabőr” -- egy valószínűleg juhbőrből készült pergamen -- 1479. június 15-én Budán kelt.
A címerkép a szokványostól eltérő módon olyan négyelt pajzsot mutat, amelyben a pajzsalakok egyik negyedből a másikba átnyúlnak. Az pedig kiváltképp nem szokásszerű, hogy a címer leírása nincs a címereslevél szövegébe foglalva, ezért vitatható, mit is ábrázol. A liliomot legelő, ágaskodó állat kecske-e, mint az a középkori és reneszánsz szimbolikában vissza-visszatérően megjelenik, vagy pedig kos, amely a harciasságot, az erőt jelenti? A kor jelképvilágát ismerve inkább a kecske mellett dönthetünk, amit egy 16. századi családtag, Kossuth Mihály Bak ragadványneve is megerősít.
Még titokzatosabb a másik pajzsalak, amelyet magyar süvegnek is neveznek a későbbi címerleírók. Lehetséges, hogy a zarándokok által szívesen használt jelkép, a kagyló az, Compostellai Szent Jakabra utalva. A címeren látható ábrázolás nem egyértelmű, különösen, ha a sisak tetejét díszítő, valóban süvegszerű motívumot nézzük. Az bizonyos, hogy a kagyló kedvelt jelkép volt, és a Mátyás király által adományozott címereken fel-feltűnik. Még méhkasnak is értelmezték a :Kossuth-címeren lévő alakot.
A többértelműség és a családon belül nem egységes címerhasználat különösen a magyar középkorra jellemző, nagy jelentőséget ezért nem is tulajdoníthatunk a címerábrázolásnak. Kossuth Lajos így ír erről 1844-ben: „becsülöm őseim nemeslevelét, mint szomorú eszközét annak, hogy a nemzet tanácstermeiben szavam legyen a szegény árva nemzet számára.” A címereslevél ma az Országos Levéltárban található.

A Kossuth-család tudvalevőleg turóczmegyei eredetű és a megyének Kossuth helységében ősidőktől fogva birtokos. A kimutatható első ős Gath, kinek fia Kossuth nevet viselt; e Kossuth 1263 táján élt. Tőle kezdve a czímerszerző Miklósig öt nemzedék virágzott, melynek tagjairól vajmi keveset tudunk. A vármegyei életben szerepelnek ugyan, de nagyobb hírnévre a középkorban nem tesznek szert. Még a czímereslevél is csak a legnagyobb általánosságban emlékezik meg a kitüntetett Kossuthi Miklós jó szolgálatairól. A történelem a XVII. század óta vesz tudomást a család őseinek viselt dolgairól.

A czímereslevél mindenesetre egyik legbecsesebb darabja a nem nagy terjedelmű régi családi levéltárnak, melyet 1896 óta a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum őriz.

Official coat of arms and flags, being defined in such a regulation, are thus in the public domain in Hungary, and also in the US, according to § 313.6(C)(2) Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, 3rd ed. 2014 (Compendium (Third)): "As a matter of longstanding public policy, the U.S. Copyright Office will not register a government edict that has been issued by any state, local, or territorial government, including legislative enactments, judicial decisions, administrative rulings, public ordinances, or similar types of official legal materials. Likewise, the Office will not register a government edict issued by any foreign government or any translation prepared by a government employee acting within the course of his or her official duties."
