Description
English: CoA of Card. Pierre d'Aubusson, 40th Grand-Master of the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint-John of Jerusalem (Knights of Rhodes), elected 17th June 1476-died 3rd July 1503). The Shield of Christianity.
Français : Armoiries du Cardinal Pierre d'Aubusson, 40ème Grand-Maître de l'Ordre des chevaliers hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem (Chevaliers de Rhodes): Ecartelé, aux 1 et 4 de la Religion, c'est-à-dire de gueules à croix d'argent ; aux 2 et 3 d'or à une croix ancrée de gueules.

Dans le Musée du Palais de Versailles, on conserve son tombeau, d'un style très élégant. Pour la première fois, l'écu du Grand Maître y est écartelé avec celui de l'Ordre, coutume qui sera suivie par tous ces successeurs. Il est surmonté d'un chapeau de cardinal.

D'abord Grand-Prieur d'Auvergne, Pierre d'Aubusson, d'une très ancienne famille issue des vicomtes de la Marche, fut élevé à la dignité suprême de l'Ordre le 17 juin 1476 ; il eut à soutenir un terrible siège de l'armée turque et fut même grièvement blessé sur la brêche (1480). Le pape Innocent VIII réunit au chapitre de Rhodes ceux du St Sépulcre et de St Lazare ; d'Aubusson reçut le chapeau de cardinal et prit le titre de Grand-Maître du St Sépulcre. Surnommé le Bouclier de la Chrétienté, il mourut le 3 juillet 1503. Source.
