English: Long parallel lines of white cloud stretched across the Yellow Sea in mid-November 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the striking phenomenon on November 18. Called cloud streets, these cumulus clouds form when frigid air blows from land then over the open ocean, chilling the moist air. As the temperature drops, water freezes into tiny clouds, which are arranged in neat rows in line with the powerful sweep of the wind. Although the cold air also is blowing over China and the Korean Peninsula, the air over the land is dry, so clouds do not form readily. The cloud streets line up parallel to the direction of the wind – in this case, the wind blows from the north.
