Description |
English: An almost complete copper-alloy dress hook dating to the post-medieval period. The body consists of an openwork trefoil of rounded loops around a central roundel depicting a human face moulded in relief. The loops are set one each side of the roundel, one below. The face mask is in three quarter view and shows a male head with long hair and beard. Above, the attachment loop is formed of a trapezoidal bar with rounded ends, seemingly plain, though corroded, connected to the body at each end by a moulded rosette of five petals at each end. At the junction of the lowermost loop and the broken recurving hook is a moulding. The hook has been bent to one side as well as having lost its tip. The metal corroded to a red-brown colour. A parallel with far clearer decoration can be found illustrated in Read (2008, 110; ref. 441). This is of Read's Early post-medieval Class E, Type 5 which is broadly 16th century in date. |
