| Description |
The famous Cloth Hall (Unesco World Heritage) of Ieper (Ypres) was built in the 13th century. It was one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages. Ieper was a very prosperous city with 40.000 inhabitants and famous for its linen trade with England. Ieper was almost totally destroyed in World War I (with three horrible "Battles of Ypres" : the last in 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele destroyed the lives of nearly half a million people... After the war the Cloth Hall and other buildings were rebuilt in the original medieval way. In the Middle Ages, superstitious inhabitants use to throw cats from the tower ! |
