Description
English: Cloghogle Townland. The mountains BESSY BELL, and MARY GRAY, in the distance are also the "twa bonnie lassies" of a Scotch ballad, daughters of two Perthshire gentlemen, who in 1666 built themselves a bower in a spot retired from a plague then raging; supplied with food by a lad in love with both of them, who caught the plague and

gave it to them, of which they all sickened and died.

Bessy Bell and Mary Gray, They were two bonnie lasses: They built their house upon the lea, And covered it with rashes.

Bessy kept the garden gate, And Mary kept the pantry; Bessy always had to wait,

While Mary lived in plenty
