English: ID number: P01649.011

Photographer: Unknown Date Made: 1945 Informal portrait of two Aboriginal servicemen, NX107875 Private (Pte) Clive Beale (right) and his brother NX31736 Pte Frederick Beale (left) in the front yard of Clive Beale's home with members of his family. Pte Frederick Beale enlisted on 11 June 1941 with another brother NX31660 Pte George Henry Beale and served with the 2/20th Battalion. They were captured after the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and spent time in Changi Prisoner of War (POW) camp before being sent to Naoetsu Camp in Japan with C Force on board Kamakura Maru, and were forced to work as steel mill labourers. Pte George Beale died on the operating table, from injuries sustained in an accident after working a 24 hour shift, on 28 May 1943. His brother, Pte Frederick Beale was released just four months later.
