Title
English: Climbing Mount Rainier, ca. 1913
Description
English:

Mount Rainier National Park was created in 1899. Within fifteen years, visitors from Seattle and Tacoma could reach the park by railroad or by car. The peak was popular with mountain climbers from all over the world. They were advised to practice at lower elevations and to take along an experienced guide. Even in the 1910s, both men and women enjoyed climbing Mount Rainier. In this photo, seven men and women, connected by rope, climb through a Mount Rainier snowfield. The women's long skirts must have made climbing difficult. The photo was taken around 1913 by Seattle photographer Clarence Rosco Langstaff, who spent some time as a guide at Mount Rainier.
