Summary[edit]

Description

Constructed in 1921, and designed by Hubbell and Benes, this building was built as the main home of the Cleveland branch of the Freemasons at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 36th Street in Cleveland's Midtown, along what was once known as Millionaire's Row. Containing the main offices and archives of the Cleveland Freemasons, the building was also home to a large Auditorium space, which was home to the Cleveland Orchestra until the construction of Severance Hall in 1931. The building was built with few windows to preserve the privacy of the masons, as well as to allow for more control of lighting and acoustics in the auditorium, but also has windows in key locations that allow for light to flood portions of the interior. Originally intended to include a mid-sized office tower on the front facade along Euclid Avenue, the plans for the tower fell through, and a stone facade was added by the firm Walker & Weeks to the structure's entrance along Euclid Avenue some time later, which included a Minaret-inspired tower, which has since been removed. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. After years of declining membership and funds, the building was sold in 2017 by the Scottish Rite Masons, who were running low on funds to maintain the structure, though they continue to occupy parts of the building. The future plans for the building are unknown, though it is certain it will be preserved and reused.
