We had to put away everything loose, since some predictions had 80 mph winds in this area. This small shelter was given to us a couple of years ago. It's flimsily built and several windstorms have weakened it to the point where we had to drive steel posts into the ground to hold it up. The point where the legs attach to the top is very weak, and the metal is torn on all the legs, so while the steel posts would probably hold the legs in place, the rest of it would probably start flying away. Since that could damage crops we decided to put it away. The thing is designed to fold up into a compact package, but the previous wind damage makes it impossible to fold. In fact the pantograming structure has been replaced by wooden strapping held on with baling twine. We decided it would be easier to take it down intact rather than try to disassemble it to fold it up. There's no guarantee we would be able to reassemble it. So we decided just to put it into the shed where we keep the tractors and other tools. And when this is all over we can tie it back onto the posts to hold it in place. It's nice to have over the picnic table in the flower picking field, but at the end of this season it will probably have to go into the dumpster. There's no room to keep it like this over the winter and we don't think we can get it folded up. A sturdier replacement will probably be installed next year. |
