Summary[edit]
DescriptionClayton Hospital, towered entrance - geograph.org.uk - 1613092.jpg |
English: Clayton Hospital, towered entrance Begun as a dispensary in 1854 in two converted houses, a hospital was built 1876-9 to designs by W Bakewell. Later 19th and 20th century additions followed.
A great benefactor was Thomas Clayton after whom the hospital is named. He made a fortune from a tallow chandlery business and became an Alderman and later Mayor of Wakefield. He provided funds for an enlarged Dispensary between Wood St and Northgate. Further endowments and subscriptions resulted in a purpose built, new, two-storey, pavilion-plan hospital, officially opened in 1879 at the present site of Clayton Hospital. Designated as a building of local interest. |
