Title
Claudius I As obverse
Description
English: An extremely worn and corroded Roman contemporary copy of an As of Claudius I (AD 41-54) (Reece period 2). Reverse: (S C?), unclear Minerva advancing right. Obverse: bare head left. Copy of RIC I, pp. 128 & 130, nos. 100 & 116; G, Boon, Counterfeit Coins in Roman Britain, plate IV, cf. nos. 49-52. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A Besombes and M Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. Therefore, the origin of this coin might be identified in the future.
