Transcribed from back of photograph: “It was a “gala” day - and justified this picture of school, pupils and teachers, as they prepared to enter the new SOUTH SCHOOL for the first classes at the opening of the Fall term on the first Monday of September in 1889. This and the Central were the city's first brick schools. On the balcony are Thomas Burke, George Orth, Beckie Schoenfelt, teacher Florence Stowell, Nellie, Mamie and Don Cowie, Herb Schoenfelt, Blanche Croffut, May Ryther, Alice Carey, Sarah Gottstein, Mamie Chamberlain, Lulu Fuller, among others.
