Summary
[edit]DescriptionCivil War-era cannon illustration (16765302941).jpg | This illustration of a Civil War cannon show the placement and use of two artifacts recently retrieved from the Savannah River during initial recovery work on the ironclad CSS Georgia. One item highlighted in the illustration held the cannon to the carriage while allowing it to change elevation. The other aided gunners in pulling the cannon into firing position. Initial investigation shows the two items survived 150 years underwater in rather good condition. The crew of the CSS Georgia scuttled the ship in 1864 as Union troops entered Savannah. The Corps of Engineers must remove the remains of the CSS Georgia from the bottom of the Savannah River in order to increase the depth of the shipping channel. Artifacts recovered from the Georgia will be shipped to Texas A&M University for further study and preservation under a contract awarded as part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). |
