The projection is Mercator like, in that a new coordinate system has been created with zero longitude and latitude centred close to the centre of the region depicted. The distortion is therefore minimised close to the centre of the image. The further from the image centre, the less the image axes correspond to standard coordinates. No attempt has been made to scale the axes equivalently.
