Summary[edit]

Description
English: T. Garnier. Cité Industrielle, Lyon, 1899-1917. Bibliotheek NAi

T. Garnier. Cité Industrielle, Lyon, 1899-1917. NAI Library

Commissioned by Lyon’s socialist city government, the city architect Garnier worked on his designs for an industrial city for many years. It was prompted by Lyon’s rapid industrialisation and the need to eliminate overcrowding and unhygienic living conditions. The Cité Industrielle is the first urban model based on ‘hygienism’ and the zoning of dwelling, working, transport and amenities. The city’s spatial layout and the way the architecture is embedded in the natural environment ensure, in combination with the east/west orientation, that there is direct natural light in all the dwellings. Only half the residential lots are built on; the rest consists of gardens and is a public walking area.
