Summary[edit]

Description

Cisco had climbed up to almost 10,000 feet during a nine-mile hike the previous year, so I assumed he would have no trouble on the Mt Baldy climb. But that time had been in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, on a trail mostly of dirt and duff and snow. The Ski Hut trail is much rockier, especially above the Ski Hut itself.

Finally after a long break when CIsco seemed reluctant to go any further, I got out the dog booties I had been carrying for emergencies and put them on his feet.

I had experimented with these in the past at home. Cisco hated them and wouldn't walk when I put them on, except enough to attempt to kick them off. I realized I could only carry them in case of emergencies, not as a normal bit of dog climbing gear.

But when I put them on this time, Cisco got up and started running down the trail as fast as he could. His tail was curled happily over his back for the first time all day. He still tried to kick the booties off, but on the other hand suddenly his feet no longer hurt from walking so he could charge down the trail in his usual manner.

One problem with the booties is his feet would be prone to sliding on sandy surfaces, which surprised him. Whenever it occurred, he'd stop and stand there trying to figure out what happened. Very quickly he became more careful on such surfaces.

He loathed those booties, which was really unfortunate. I wish he was able to work out how beneficial they were. By the end of the hike he was walking quite naturally in them. At this writing, I am still trying to decide whether we retire Cisco from hiking altogether, or simply make him wear the booties on future hikes. He'd probably get used to them.
