Church of San Giorgio Maggiore (illustrated on opposite page) The great church, with its numerous outbuildings and offices,occupies an island on the bosom of a broad lagoon, on the sur-face of which many gondolas are passing to and fro. On thebroad plaza before the portico groups of gayly clad peopleare walking in the sunlight, while behind, a towering cam-panile stands out against the blue Italian sky. BEAUMONT AND CHILD An early example of the painters work. The mother sitsclasping her fair-haired child of about two years of age to herbosom. A gauze scarf serves as a background to her softbrown hair and falls over her shoulders. Her face is in three-quarter view to the right, the eyelids drooping over her eyesas she gazes in meditative fashion at the floor. No. 34FIlA:NrCIS COTES, B.A. 1726—1770PORTRAIT OF A BOY The three-quarter length portrait of a young lad of some tenor twelve years of age, standing by a grassy bank surmountedby a tree, upon which he is leaning his right arm, his wholebody being slightly inclined in that direction. He wears a loosejacket of dark blue cloth, unbuttoned and worn open to showhis soft white shirt, with a narrow collar of lace round theneck. The trousers are of the same material as the coat. Hisleft arm hangs in front of the body, the hand holding a capround which is a band of gold braid. Height, 35 inches; width, 28 inches. Francis Cotes was a contemporary and rival of Sir Joshua Reynolds.He was an eminent artist in crayons, was one of the first members ofthe Royal Academy, and also a member of the incorporated Society ofArtists.
