Summary[edit]

Description
English: Chivelstone: Lannacombe Converted watermill and limekiln by Lannacombe beach. Seen from the South West Coast Path looking west-north-west. In the Napoleonic wars a French raiding party came ashore here, possibly for fresh water, and they took the opportunity to ransack the mill, taking everything they could find, much to the miller’s distress. It was a relatively remote location two hundred years ago and his wife was with a newly-born child. With some presence of mind the miller threw his bag of money out through an open window, hoping to recover it after the privateers had gone. He was lucky: next day his purse was found among the branches of a elder tree. An apocryphal tale perhaps, but recorded by Fairweather over a hundred years ago. [Salcombe and Neighbourhood. 1884]
