erform miracles when miracles are necessary. But they are neverneeded by a religion which has once grown large and strong enoughto stand alone, and certainly the Christian religion does not needmiracles. Miracles are on the plane of the material and perishable.Miracles are temporary, and must be few. The building up of a high, strong, holy character out of one thatis depraved and low is a greater work than raising Lazarus. The elimination and preparation of a truth is greater than is amiracle which only changes water to wine or multiplies loaves. Men who lead holy lives do, by so living, carry greater convictionto the hearts of the world than if they wrought miracles, in thevulgar sense of that word. Under the preaching of probably eachone of the apostles more people were converted than under theministry of Christ, and more under the influence of humble Chris-tians in our day than under any of the apostles. Such honor haveall his saints. Have you this honor, O brother pastor? Have I ?
