Title
English: Chinese students arriving on S.S. President Jackson, September 1, 1923
Description
English:

The S.S. President Jackson was one of five ships operated by the Admiral Line, also known as The Admiral Oriental Line. These ocean going vessels supported an import and export business out of Seattle. They also served as passenger liners, bringing groups of visitors from Asian countries to the Pacific Northwest. Most of the Chinese students in this photo came from Tsinghua College in Beijing. The Chinese government sponsored graduates of its colleges and universities to attend elite institutes of higher education throughout the United States. Among this group was Professor Gu Yu Xiu, the first Chinese to receive a PhD from MIT. A few female students were also included among the predominantly male group.
