Changing the width in Firebug shows the following:

The small stars are not shown for widths at <155px, and the big star is not shown for widths at <52px

This is a peculiarity of the current version of this flag (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Flag_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China.svg).

When the href value is replaced by the version before (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/f/fa/20120522203651!Flag_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China.svg), the problem disappears.

Note: To link to the SVG file is a bad idea anyway. To get a 100px thumbnail this would be the correct link: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fa/Flag_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China.svg/100px-Flag_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China.svg.png.

Addendum to Note: Within Wikimedia projects and including the various Wikipedias, it's okay to use a wikified link in code to display an image, like this — [[File:filename.svg]] — as Wikimedia servers create PNG thumbnails for each requested SVG image that is not used in the original form, which is almost always.

There are additional caveats wrt directly linking to SVG images:

  • Not all browsers are able to render SVG images properly, but most all are now able to display PNG files; and
  • Commons policy generally discourages hotlinking (reasons at link), which is why an own-served SVG image with a PNG fallback similar to the Wikimedia implementation is a better solution.
