English: China clay boat loading at Charlestown - 1 This picture of 1973 shows Charlestown as a still-active port. On the eastern side of the dock lorries brought the china clay down to the quayside and tipped it into the hold via the chutes. The whole area was covered in white dust. This little harbour was purpose built in 1801 by Charles Rashleigh (after whom it as named) for exporting china clay, copper and tin, and for importing coal. It was designed by John Smeaton, the man responsible for the Eddystone Lighthouse. In 1790 the settlement was known as West Polmear and had a population of 9 people. This had swelled to 3,184 by 1911 in its heyday. The last China clay shipment from Charlestown was on the M.V.Ellen on 13th December 1999 and now the harbour is dedicated to the repair of historic tall ships and is a famous film set, which started with The Onedin Line and Poldark in the 1970s. We think it holds the record as the most-used film location in Cornwall.
