Text Appearing Before Image:
In one hand it holds the emblem of thecross, while the other is extended in a blessing, and as if uttering the one magic word Peace. On one side is a tablet with theinscription: Sooner shall these mountainscrumble into dust than the people of Argentinaand Chile break the peace to which they havepledged themselves at the feet of Christ theRedeemer. On another side is the inscrip-tion : He is our PeaceWho hath made both One. The Cumbre, as this ridge is called, is thehighest point on the old trail. The Backbone of the Continent 163 inches between the outside wheels and the edgeof the precipice. The clouds have voices, and the rivers pourTheir floods in thunder down to oceans floor; —The hills alone mysterious silence keep. One of the most striking aspects which im-press the traveller crossing the Andes is theterribly bleak and desolate outlook that theypresent. Blades of grass here and there, orperhaps a few stunted shrubs, are the onlysigns of vegetation, for of trees there are none. There seems to be no tree line, as in mostmountains. A huge expanse of yellow sandand stone spreads out everywhere with peaksrising up on every side in clearly defined andrugged stratification, whose many-colouredhues are almost bewildering to the eye. Greattorrents flow down the middle of the valleys, the water being of a dull brackish hue. Thefording of these streams is a very dangeroustask for the explorer, as the torrents are ex-ceedingly rapid and full of deep, treacherousholes. On either side
