Perhaps there will be some loose stoneslying about for all sorts of play-building. The pit neednot be so deep as the one in my picture, whereChristopher is climbing up the dizzy heights, havingdeposited his small brother on a safe shelf at a lowerlevel. Do you see the row of holes in the face ofthe pit rather high up—they are made by the sand-martins, pretty little birds of the swallow kind thatmigrate, as naturalists say, meaning that the bird isin England only a part of the year. They come inMarch or April and are gone early in September. Theymake neat round holes in the sand, boring deep intoit, so that the nests are nearly two feet from theentrance hole. They are what is called gregarious,meaning that a number of them make their homesnear together. In digging their holes they carefullychoose just the kind of sand that suits them best.
