. j Editors Introductory Note Charles Dickens, the greatest English novelist, was bornFebruary 7, 1812, at Landsport, near Portsmouth, Eng-land. His education was received in public schools and hebegan life as a newspaper reporter, after having served fora time as a clerk in an attorneys office. His PickwickPapers, published in 1836-1837, established his literaryreputation. From that time on until his death on June 9,1870, at Gadshill, near Rochester, England, he continuedto write. His most famous work is Pickwick Papers, hisbest, The Tale of Two Cities, and the most popularChristmas Stories. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. The second part of these volumes is of quite a differentcharacter from the preceding volumes. Works on naturalhistory are always favorite reading with the young andRev. J. G.
