English: An individual at prayer in the Children's Chapel at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
This chapel was funded by Roland H. Taylor and his wife in 1911, in honor of their six-year-old son, Roland Leslie Taylor, who died in 1911. Taylor was a wealthy Philadelphia banker and investment manager. Built in the distorted shaped of a Greek cross, the altar in the chapel backed by a richly carved, gilded, and painted reredo depicting scenes of the child Jesus. Everything inside is child-sized -- from the low ceiling to the pews, the organ, the altar, the sculpture. The stained glass windows in the chapel depict youthful people from the Bible, such as David and Samuel. The Children's Chapel was dedicated on September 17, 1939. |
