Summary[edit]

Description Built in 1962, this was the last onshore manned lighthouse built for the explicit purpose of being a navigational aid in the United States. The interior of the triangular utilitarian steel and aluminum structure has air conditioning and an elevator, with the beacon being the second-most powerful in the Western Hemisphere as far as luminosity, but is not used at its full brightness. It is a non-contributing resource in the U.S. Coast Guard Historic District, now part of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park.
