Manuscript letter

Archives Number: 1002/9.3-159#032

[pencil annotation:] Bought by H.W.L. Dana, October 1942, for 50 cents from Heise
Washington
27th Decbr ‘69
Dear Hillard,
Since my [guffmage?] of yesterday I have received a letter from a “naturalist” volunteering tertinary, which seems to me interesting as attesting the unity of the human family, putting aside the question of origin.
Father Hyacanthe, who heard me in New York, asked me afterwards, it the Unity of the Human Family would [p. 2] not stand as truth even if diversity of origin were recognized. I had no hesitation in answering affirmatively, adding that to my mind the latter was at least doubtful while the former was beyond question. I was struck by the inquiry of the Catholic Father; for are not the Church and John Calvin all dependent on Adam & his fall?
Every Yours,
Charles Sumner
