Summary[edit]

Description
English: Charles II or George II ?, Golden Square This could be a statue of King Charles II, or King George II, or neither !

The notice boards in the square say "The statue in the square was erected in 1753. It is said to represent Charles II and has been attributed to John Van Nost". But the plinth is inscribed with "GEORGIVS II" and the year 1753 was during the reign of George II. A third opinion is given at the British History Online website in the article about Golden Square http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41461 - it starts by saying it is supposed to represent George II, but also suggests that the statue may have been an allegorical figure that was originally one of 24 statues on the roof balustrade at Cannons, and an anonymous bidder bought it when Cannons was demolished a few years earlier and then had it erected in the square in 1753.

The statue doesn't look like portraits that I have seen of either monarch, so the 3rd theory is probably correct.
