Summary[edit]

Description
English: March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites.

Name: Charlene Swartz

Title: Maintenance Worker Wage Grade 8-5, Acting Facilities Manager

Duty Station: Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

During high school, Charlene worked summers at a day care. After graduation, she was interested in starting her own day care center, but her dad suggested she pursue a career where she didn’t have to change diapers all day. So, Charlene started working for the National Park Service in 1988 and was one of the only females working in maintenance in the entire country. She stayed on Assateague Island where she was hired by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 2003. She still remains one of the few women working on maintenance teams, but has shown tremendous talent for the job and is currently performing the duties of Facilities Manager at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. In this role she acts as a supervisor and orchestrates the demanding maintenance duties inherent in a location that receives over 1 million visitors each year!

What’s your favorite thing about working for FWS?
Being outside and working with a family of people. Plowing snow, wielding a chainsaw, & maintain trails are all examples of ways Charlene gets to enjoy nature during her workday. When she is indoors, Charlene embraces the “family” atmosphere among staff at the refuge. In addition, she grew up in the community so her ties help to connect the refuge family to the local Volunteer Fire Department.

What’s your favorite species and why?

Charlene’s favorite animals are horses, which are a beloved though unusual feature of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Charlene she grew up with the ponies and has been riding horses since she was 5 years old. Her dad was a Chincoteague firefighter, so she has strong ties to the cultural history surrounding the horses in the area. Charlene now serves the vital role of refuge contact for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. She is an integral link between refuge and community during major events such as the Annual Pony Swim.
