Description

Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne)

Octroi de la porte Saint-Jean.

En 1825, deux pavillons d'octroi encadrant une porte en arche avec une grille de cloture, sont construits. Chaque pavillon respecte un plan rectangulaire sur le modèle d'un petit temple prostyle (avec une seule rangée de 4 colonnes en façade).

Les deux pavillons sont détruits en 1849, puis, un pavillon est reconstruit à l'identique la même année.

La porte est démontée en 1885.

Aujourdhui, il reste un pavillon avec une partie de la grille.

L'octroi, système de douane locale, était une source de revenus importante pour les communes. La ville octroyait le droit d'entrée des marchandises en contrepartie d'une taxe. Impopulaire, l'octroi fut supprimé et rétabli à plusieurs reprises. Le régime de Vichy supprimera l'octroi par une loi de janvier 1943, mais l'application dans les faits ne se fera qu'en 1948.
