DescriptionCenter of the Town of Belmonte -- A Center for Crypto-Judiasm - Apr 2011.jpg | While Portugal originally resisted the Spanish Inquisition that began in 1492 and even provided refuge to a number of Spanish Jews fleeing for their lives from Spain, the Inquisition came to Portugal in 1536 and lasted until 1821. Countless thousands of Jews were slaughtered, often by being burned alive at the stake after undergoing horrible torture. Other Jews converted to Christianity but a number also became "Crypto-Jews" -- Jews who took on all the outer trappings of Christianity but remained true to their ancestral faith. Belmonte was one of the centers of the Crypto-Jews and today there is an active synagogue as well as museum dedicated to the town's Jewish history as well as the many citizens of the town who were murdered. | ||
