Summary[edit]

Description
English: The education building at Centenary United Methodist Church, 3 West Washington Street at Liberty Street, Bath, New York, October 2022. A work of architect Roger L. Patterson of the Buffalo-based firm of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec, the design of the building was described succinctly in the pages of the Steuben Courier-Advocate as "completely modern" - a style that clashed noticeably with that of the original 1866 church building, but harmonizes much better with the present one, an exuberant structure that was built in 1977 after its predecessor burned. Nonetheless, the school building's take on Modernism is much more staid and subdued by comparison with the sanctuary: most interesting are the windows on the Washington Street side of the building, seen at right here; tall and narrow, recessed between pilaster-like vertical ribs and with pebbledash spandrel panels between the upper and lower floors as a contrast with the brown brick veneer that comprises the remainder of the façade. Note also the cantilevering of the flat roof over the exterior walls. One of the oldest extant religious congregations in Bath, Centenary Methodist Church was founded in 1822, and prior to the construction of this building, their educational programs were undertaken in a small white house on the same site that they had purchased and repurposed for their own use. The church's Building Committee signed off on the final design in October 1963, which was connected to the sanctuary by a covered breezeway and contained eight classrooms for use variously by youth groups, kindergartens, and Sunday school classes; a church office and pastor's study, a small library and kitchenette, and storage space. Construction was completed the following year.
