Turiddu, enraged,rushes on Santuzza, and then casts her from him.She pleads once more to be taken back to his heart,but in vain. At last he dashes her to the ground,and follows Lola into the church. Now Santuzza slove seems to be turned to hate. She curses thetraitor, and when Alfio appears, she seizes thechance of revenge, telling him that his wife is false.When, however, she realises that Alfio means tofight and kill Turiddu, she bitterly regrets havingbetrayed him; for, in spite of his faithlessness, shestill loves him. Ah, wretched 11 she cries, whileAlfio demands Revenge, revenge! And thusends the first part of the work. After its stormand stress depicting the conflict of human passions,the world-famed Intermezzo comes like a breathof fresh air to cool the atmosphere. 248

Santuzza tells Alfio of his wife's falseness CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA The second part of the stirring drama beginswith a short orchestral prelude, during which Luciaenters and crosses the stage to her cottage. Anumber of peasants follow, singing on their home-ward way after the Easter celebrations. At theclose of their merry lay, they are joined by Lolaand Turiddu from the church. Lola is also goinghome, but Turiddu begs her to stay. At the sametime, turning to the crowd, he invites them to drinkwith him to-day. They accept and come to thetable for the wine, while Turiddu sings a rousingdrinking song, in which presently the whole companylustily join. They have just uttered the last words, Drink on, drink on, when Alfio enters and salutesthem. Turiddu at once fills a cup and hands it tohim. Thank you, says Alfio, * the wine you give,I cannot drink it. There is poison within it; towhich Turiddu replies, Tis as you please, throw-ing away the wine.
