Summary[edit]
DescriptionCattle stance marker (number one) - geograph.org.uk - 1126061.jpg |
English: Cattle stance marker (number one). The large stone positioned centrally in this image was originally an upright marker post that indicated the location of a cattle stance (a place on a cattle droving route where drovers and their herds might rest overnight).
The stone has now been incorporated into a cairn; see 992573, where the end of the same stone is visible (the end is square, with rounded corners); that end was the top of the marker when it stood upright, and a large "1" is carved into it (there is also some writing on the side, but that seems to be just defacement). The cairn is located along the route of an ancient drove road (see link just cited). Prof Robert A. Rankin concludes his booklet "March Stones in the Kilpatrick Hills – A Feuars' Dispute of the 1850s" by mentioning several other kinds of engraved stone that can be found in the nearby hills; among these are three cattle stance markers, of which my photo shows number 1. Marker number 3 likewise remains on the moor: 1126063 (that item also discusses the whereabouts of marker 2). Markers 1 and 3 have the same dimensions: their upper portion is 7 inches × 7 inches in cross section, but with rounded edges. |
