Greyhounds are often seen in paintings of the adoration by the Magi, for they were the companions to aristocrats. But why should a dog totally unsuited to herding sheep be in this adoration by the shepherds? Because Jesus was unquestionably high-born, the Son of God, and thus requires a Greyhound, not an ordinary dog.
