Description

Cat Darst, Assistant Field Supervisor: Listing and Recovery Division Credit: USFWS

Cat Darst, Assistant Field Supervisor: Listing and Recovery Division Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office, Ventura, Calif.

Who is your Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? My heroes are all my amazing female friends who recognize that success and happiness being who you are and doing what you love are real possibilities and live their lives accordingly.

Where did you go to school or military branch? I did my undergrad at UC- Davis and went to graduate school at University of Texas, Austin.

What did you study? Evolutionary ecology

How did you get interested in conservation? I did my graduate work on frogs in the Ecuadorian Amazon and wanted to learn more about what we were doing at home in the U.S. for conservation. Through the Presidential Management Fellowship program, I got a two-year crash course in conservation and science policy in D.C., which eventually landed me with the Fish and Wildlife Service working on desert tortoise recovery, then as the Assistant Field Supervisor in Ventura!

What’s your favorite species and why?

Amphibians and reptiles will always be closest to my heart. Once a herpetologist, always a herpetologist.
