medieval castle in europe: leiria (shiro) The name of the city during the Roman period was Collippo. Little is known about the time of the Visigoths, but during the period (8th-12th centuries) of the Muslims of Al-Andalus was a town with a garrison. The place was the first king of Portugal, Afonso I of Portugal in 1135, captured during the so-called Reconquista. Leiria was briefly occupied by the Muslims in 1137 and 1140. Recaptured in 1142 Afonso I of Portugal Leiria. In 1190 the Almohad knew from Morocco to recapture Leiria, but this was short lived. |
