Português: No século X, após ter enviuvado do Conde Hermenegildo (ou Mendo) Gonçalves, a Condessa Mumadona Dias assume o governo do Condado Portucalense e toma duas medidas de grande importância funda, na parte baixa de Guimarães, o Mosteiro de Santa Maria (por volta do ano de 950) e, na parte alta, um castelo, o denominado Castelo de S. Mamede (entre os anos 950 e 957). A construção deste castelo foi necessária para defender o Mosteiro recém edificado e as populações que, entretanto, se foram fixando junto a estas duas construções. A construção deste Castelo foi igualmente, uma forma de afirmar o seu poder perante os demais senhores feudais. Um diploma que assinala a entrega do Castelo de S. Mamede ao Mosteiro de Guimarães, em 4 de dezembro de 968, é a primeira referência conhecida a esta fortificação |
