Notes Edwardian dressing case with plaque inside lid engraved "PRESENTED TO MRS SAML. YATES BY L.D. and N.A. NATHAN 1903" Ngawini (Annie) Murray married Samuel Yates in 1880. The couple owned and leased a large property totalling some 150,000 acres near Parengarenga, running livestock and also yielding kauri gum. In addition to raising 11 children Ngawini helped manage the property and ran the property and the Parengarenga Store on her own from 1900, following the death of her husband, to 1910. Ngawini was born at Pukepoto, near Kaitaia, probably in 1852 or 1853. Her father was John Murray, also known as John Boradale, a shipwright and long-time European resident of Pukepoto. Her mother, Kateraina Te Kone, was descended from Tarutaru, the ancestor of Te Rarawa. She is listed in the 1902 Cyclopaedia of New Zealand as Mrs. Samue Yates, Gum Buyer, Runholder and General Merchant, Parengarenga, Bankers, Bank of New Zealand. Auckland agents, Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. Telegraphic address, “Yates, Parengarenga.”
