Description
English: In anticipation of Theodore Roosevelt entering the race for the 1912 Republican presidential nomination, this Harper’s Weekly cartoon lampoons his desire for the spotlight. His eldest daughter, Alice, is usually attributed with the observation, “My father always wanted to be the corpse at every funeral, the bride at every wedding, and the baby at every christening.” Here, the grinning former president holds Outlook magazine, for which he contributed articles advocating his political ideas. Dressed as a ballerina, he balances atop the rocking horse of “Notoriety.” The hobbyhorse (in this case, rocking horse) symbolized a preoccupation or obsession.
