DescriptionCarmel Mission (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California).jpg | San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo is the second of the California Missions to be established at Monterey in 1770 by the legendary missionary priest Fr. Junipero Serra and is said to be the most beautiful among the missions. The mission was moved to its present site in 1771 where the church was started to be built in 1793. It was the headquarters of the California Mission chain from 1770 until 1803. French pirates raided the mission in 1818 and has been in ruins until 1884 when restoration work started. The small city of Carmel-by-the-Sea where the the mission is located is a reknowned arts colony where noted actor Clint Eastwood once served as mayor (December 2010). | ||
