English: Fig. 244: Lamp Mechanism. Carlisle and Finch 30-inch search-light.

Fig.244 shows the general appearance of the lamp mechanism. This is mounted in the drum. The entire working part may be moved forward or backward in the containing box by means of a screw spindle operated by an external hand wheel. This permits setting the arc in the focus of the mirror. Carbon electrodes with soft cores are used, the larger being made the positive

because it burns more rapidly. The life of a pair of carbons is about seven hours.
