Newport, Providence, Washington, Bristol, andKent. Bays and Islands. Narragamet Baif makes upfrom south to north, between the main land on the eastand west. It embosoms many fertile islands, the prin-cipal of which are Rhode Island, Canonnicut, Prudence,Patience, Hope, Dyers and Hog Islands. The harbours are Newport, Providence, Wickford,Patuxet, Warren, and Bristol. Rhode Inland, from which the State takes half itsname, is 15 miles in length ; its average breadth is about3 1-2 miles. It is divided into three townships, New-port, Portsmouth and Middletown. This island, inpoint of soil, climate, and situation, may probably beranked among the finest and most charming in the world. Travellers have named it the Eden of America.More than 30,000 sheep are fed on this island, besidesneat cattle and horses.
