English: Saturday 29 December 2007. The alleyway between Carew Road and Dowsett Road.
Brian Haley, formerly Labour "cabinet" councillor for the Environment, used to ask people to look on the positive side. Glass half full; instead of half empty. As you can see, almost the entire width and length of this alley is clean and tidy. At least 24 metres (26 yards) were completely clear of dumping between the pile near Dowsett Road and this second assortment: - mattress, smashed-up TV and bags of garbage. Interestingly, everything except the mattress could and would have been collected for free from the dumper's home. (It takes one phonecall.) A friend living in another part of Tottenham describes the dumped mattresses and beds on streets near her home. "It's all the same cheap rubbish. Mattresses covered in the same blue, white and sometimes yellow check. (The yellow isn't always part of the design.) A second-hand shop has dozens of new mattresses piled high outside. They're a few quid and who can blame temporary tenants for replacing the bedding?" "If we painted the whole of Tottenham blue, white and yellow check, the dumped mattresses wouldn¹t show." |
