Summary

Description

Église Notre-Dame, Carentan, Manche, Basse-Normandie, France

English: Medieval stained glass window in the 26th bay (west-most south window of the south aisle), created c. 1445, displaying the Annunciation (two central panels in the upper row) and in the lower eight panels eight scenes of the Miracle des Billettes about a Jew who supposedly attempted to descrate a blessed sacrament. Rumors about host desecrations were a recurrent pattern of the persecution of Jews in the Middle Ages. The individual panels:
  • Upper row: Saint John, Annunciation (two panels), Saint Margaret
  • Middle row: A Christian woman borrows silver from the Jew Jonathan (first panel), who holds in pledge her vestments and demands the promise that she delivers a sacred host (second panel); she confesses the theft of the host (third panel), while Jonathan attempts to desecrate the host with a knife (fourth panel).
  • Lower row: Jonathan pierces the host with a lance tip causing the host to sputter blood (first panel), after which the host is thrown into boiling water (second panel); then a neighbor rescues successfully the host (third panel) and returns it to a priest (fourth panel).
The last two panels and the core of the top section depicting God the Father were added by Michel Durand in 1984. See also p. 124 in Martine Callias Bey and Véronique David: Les vitraux de Basse-Normandie, ISBN 2-84706-240-8.
