CARE OF THE MOUTH AND TEETH 49 ration used; they should not contain fermentablesubstances which might injure the teeth, and theyshould be free of staining chemicals, whose effectwould be to discolor the teeth; above all, theyshould not be actively acid in character. The materials mostly used in these preparationsare precipitated chalk, or calcium carbonate, finelyground magnesium carbonate prepared from oystershells, cuttlefish bone and orris root, while groundpumice stone, borax and oxide of tin are moreespecially used by the dentist because they are toocoarse for every-day use. Tooth powders, while usually white, may alsobe obtained colored. Some powders may be usedalone, as, for instance, precipitated chalk, whileothers are made consisting of more than one in-gredient, whose basis is usually one of the sub-stances mentioned above. Pastes which are made by the use of glycerineor gelatine usually have precipitated chalk as abasis and often contain soap in conjunction withvarious othe
