Summary[edit]
DescriptionCarbonate crystal growth.jpg |
English: Carbonate (dolomite) crystals are important minerals in many base metal deposits, and are found in close association with massive sulphides (zinc-lead) in the Irish Orefield. These impressive minerals form in different ways, with carbonate rocks being the main host of metals in Ireland. But, the example shown here is the result of hot fluids circulating through the ground, resulting in these characteristic zoning features. This image is from the Lisheen mine, in south Ireland, and was taken at the Imperial College London using a cold cathodoluminescence microscope. Field of view: ~2 mm. |
