English: A car in Orchard Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, waits for a bus - Southern Vectis Scania OmniCity 1152 Watcombe Bay (HW09 BAA) - to reverse out of the bus station into the road, before being able to move on. The design of the new bus station is fundamentally flawed: It is too small. The bus station was designed for less buses than the amount that currently use it, so it often gets blocked up. The parking area for buses out of service consists of a 2x2 block of bays. This means that if the bus at the back needs to leave before the one parked in front of it, it has to reverse into the road, risking running someone over or hitting another vehicle, and clearly it's not particularly safe. Even more confusing it that the through road actually goes around an extra bus bay (just about visible in the left of this photo), so car drivers have to drive through the middle of manoeuvring buses. |
